What’s a Carriage House?

A carriage house is a detached structure built for housing horse-drawn carriages in the past. A carriage house can be located on the same property as the main residence or in another part of the property. It can be an addition or extension of an existing structure, or it may have been constructed as its structure. A lot of space normally surrounds a carriage house.

What Is a Garage?

A garage is a structure used to store vehicles and is usually attached to the house. Garages are found on almost every residential property, but they can also be used to store other items like tools or lawn equipment.

A garage is a space to park your car or other vehicles and keep them safe from the elements or theft. It’s a place where people store their vehicles when they’re not using them.

Garages are good for storing cars because they’re out of the weather and away from prying eyes, but they’re also great for storing other things like bicycles and lawn mowers.

Carriage House Types

There are different carriage houses:

  • Victorian: The most common carriage house type is the Victorian, which was once the dominant style for all older homes. They are unique carriage types because they were prevalent from the 1860s-1900.
  • Modern: The second most common carriage house type is the modern carriage house, which features a 3-car garage. The floor plans depend on the builder and a dwelling house of two full stories above it.
  • Condominiums: It shares walls with neighbors, and the owner owns the land of the condominiums. It has multiple rooms and has been built in less than 30 years.
  • Townhome: A townhome is an older type of residence that includes a single-story house with a lot size of at least 5,000 square feet. Townhomes are built on slabs or foundation piers and have one-car garages on either side; they also share walls with neighbors.
  • Modular homes: Modular homes are manufactured (or “mobile homes,” if built on-site). They’re designed to be portable and can be taken apart and reassembled after purchase by the homeowner. Modulars include traditional-style homes with front porches and backyards and newer designs with more modern interiors and features such as stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. Modulars come in sizes ranging from 500 square feet.

Common Types of Garage?

There are different types of garages:

  • A detached garage is not attached to the main house. It can be used for storing vehicles or other items, but it’s not designed to be a permanent residence.
  • An attached garage is connected to your home’s foundation, which can be used as an extra bedroom or storage space.
  • Breezeway – A breezeway is a place for people to walk from the house and into their garage. It can be useful if you have pets and want them to be able to get out of the way of each other when they come in and out of the house. This type of space is often used with a carport or workshop, which can also serve as storage space for these items.
  • Garage Workshop – A garage workshop is where mechanics work on cars, bikes, and other vehicles. These spaces can be very large, but they often do not allow access to the inside of the building.

Though the two words are often used interchangeably, a clear distinction exists between the two. As we can see here, it’s as easy as looking at the definitions of each word to understand how they differ. A garage typically refers to where we park our cars, while a carriage house generally refers to a smaller building that housed carriages in the past. So whether you’re renovating an old home or preparing to build your next dream house, choose the right living space for your family.
